LoPA - Layer of Protection Analysis.
Processes should be designed as far as possible to be inherently safe. Inherent safety means removing or reducing hazardous inventory, or ensuring that the process design is so robust that the likelihood of a hazardous event is extremely low when compared to other risks.
However, it is not always possible to reduce risk to tolerable levels by inherent safety measures. Where further risk reduction is required, protection layers will be needed to prevent incidents propagating into accidents, and mitigation layers will be needed to minimise the consequences of hazardous failure events.
Using example piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID), the course takes you through how the technique is applied in a real-world example. The course authors provide direct individual feedback on exercises that are set at key points in the learning exercises.
At the end of the course you should be ready to participate effectively in a LoPA as a valued team member.
