It is very important at the outset of any project potentially involving safety instrumented systems to carefully set out the life-cycle steps that are planned. This may involve extracting some aspects of the generic IEC 61511 life-cycle, but it must inevitably go further.
A simple example is the selection of methods and procedures to be used. IEC 61511 gives a lot of latitude on use of different methods, meaning the user must decide at the outset on the approach that will be used, including the required inputs, processes and outputs at each step.
