SIL Verification Calculations - SAFETY FUNCTIONS on FPSOs

Using our industry expertise and aeShield Software, we regularly provide support to a major original equipment manufacturer in the Oil & Gas sector for floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) facilities.


Our scope of supply starts with reviewing the project-specific P&IDs, Cause and Effects, and other relevant documentation. We populate the aeShield software with safety instrumented function components and calculate the average probability of failure on demand (PFDavg) and achieved SIL for each function.

Functional Safety Consulting - HIGH POWER STATIONARY FUEL CELL SYSTEM

eFunctionalSafety provided HAZOP, LOPA, SRS and SIL verification support to an Original Equipment Manufacturer developing an exciting new product for the emerging energy sector; using hydrogen to generate backup electricity for data centres, without any of the harmful environmental emissions of traditional diesel generators.

The project was fast-track and demanding, and eventually required a validation test plan to be delivered on a very tight timescale.

As eFunctionalSafety had delivered the SRS and SIL verification using aeShield, we were able to turn around validation test plans in record time, with the assurance of complete consistency of the SIS test plan, the SRS and system cause & effects.

Risk & SIL Assessment - MINING MACHINERY

A manufacturer in the mining sector engaged eFunctionalSafety to support their team with risk and SIL assessments for major machinery being developed for a large new iron ore mine in Africa.

eFunctionalSafety led the team in a machinery risk assessment using a simplified what-if technique (SWIFT) approach, followed by a layer of protection analysis (LOPA) study.

SIL Study - BATCH PHARMACEUTICALS

We facilitated a team SIL study for a major extension of a batch pharmaceutical process, using the Layer of Protection Analysis (LoPA) technique to analyse identified hazards and determine safety integrity levels (SIL).


The project involved providing an amended LOPA procedure, as the end user had previously used a calibrated risk graph in earlier studies. Several stages of study were undertaken to analyse more than 40 hazardous scenarios, resulting in a unique LoPA worksheet for each scenario and a summary report of the findings.

Functional Safety Assessment - CHEMICAL COMPANY

A Stage 4 & 5 Functional Safety Assessment (FSA), in accordance with the IEC 61511 FSA recommended stages, was required for a safety instrumented system undergoing an upgrade at a chemical plant.

 

eFunctionalSafety provided the lead assessor to scope, plan and deliver the assessment. Firstly, the existing system was assessed for non-conformance in key aspects of operating and maintaining the SIS, including a review of proof test records.

 

Following this, the SIS modification project was assessed across all stages, including the hazard analysis, LOPA, safety requirements, and design changes to the Safety Instrumented System hardware and software.

LOPA Facilitation - OIL REFINERY

eFunctionalSafety supported a major new refinery project in Kuwait by providing the Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) study facilitator for three units: Hydrogen Production Unit, Amine Regeneration Unit, and Sulphur Recovery Unit.


The project support was provided in phases, leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams of 15+ people in the study workshops. Our deliverable was a SIL determination report for each unit, ready for use by the project team in creating the safety requirements specification for the project's safety instrumented functions.
