Where Fault Tree Analysis is Needed

  • Projects involving SIS, SIF and SIL
Projects involving Safety Integrity Level (SIL) rated safety instrumented systems (SIS) sometimes need additional analysis by FTA. This is most likely with novel designs or higher SIL requirements (SIL 2 and above)
  • Hydrogen Industry
Recent standards for fuel cells and electrolyzers require analysis techniques from the process industry. FTA is useful for demonstrating compliance with novel designs that are emerging in this sector.
  • Chemicals
There are many candidates for SIL-rated safety instrumented systems in chemical production, requiring conformance with IEC 61511.
  • Oil & Gas
High Integrity Pressure Protection Systems (HIPPS) often need SIL verification with fault tree analysis.

CASE STUDY: Fault Tree Analysis

eFunctionalSafety completed a detailed Fault Tree Analysis of an innovative new Hydrogen Fuel Cell product destined to back up data centres.

The client was on a tight schedule for delivery, and had demanding needs to demonstrate compliance with specific safety standards in functional safety and stationary fuel cell systems.

The novelty of the design made traditional methods such as LOPA (layers of protection analysis) insufficient to demonstrate a quantified risk assessment. FTA was the answer because it graphically represents the system in a way that everyone can follow.
